This definitely came off as you judging poor people, imo. Like... you can only be underconsuming if you had the means to be overconsuming in the first place. This is just what life is like for those of us, myself included, living under the poverty line and scraping by day to day. To say we can't participate in a trend because we don't have enough money to overconsume anyway is really weird.

I'd say underconsumption / minimalism is for the people who want to do better both for the planet and their own finances. The people who want to make better choices despite being forced into the cycle of single-use and quick-fix products forced on us as the "norm"

All I can focus on is that one clip (7:18) where the creator says "no bedframe because it hasn't felt necessary." GURL why do you think so many people roast men for not having one. The quickest google search of your life will tell you that "it keeps your mattress up off the floor, and protects from moist, dust and general floor gunk."

I feel like you are grasping at straws. We all do what we can, and there is a false equivalent between buying second hand or buying brand new items. I understand your point, but I believe the trend is to inspire people, and not to set themselves up for judgment. Additionally, minimalist and under consumption are not absolute terms, so they may mean different things to different people.

I think secondhand products can be considered underconsumtion in some situations (but not all). Like if you need to get furniture or clothes for your children, but you want to reduce over production and waste, getting these essential items thrifted/secondhand can be a part of underconsuming. Since they are not buying new, they are not adding to the demand of these products, this can reduce overproduction and waste. One of the reasons the sustainability community wanted to make underconsumption a trend is so that we as society can reduce the demand for 'excessive new' products. Products cause a lot of pollution and co2 emissions during the manufacturing, shipping and waste stage. However, I do believe it is overconsumption when people over buy and over spend for thrifted items they already have enough of.

I like that it exists cause sites are swarming with all these videos of unnecessary things so as long as there's a pushback it makes me happy. With people in poverty they don't have a choice but to underconsume but I agree that some of it is not really about consumption. something like replacing lightbulbs isn't really something where you can easily overconsume?

This is a very personal opinion based upon limited interaction, but I just feel kind of weird seeing things I was bullied for be the new trend. Like you said, there is a difference between poverty and underconsumption, but I also think its important to acknowledge the overlaps. It's not inherently a bad trend or purposfully jabbing at the impoverished, but it just makes me (personally) feel... weird.... conflicted
